Autumn Term
In the run up to Christmas, we practised our sewing skills, and put this into good use when creating our very own Christmas Stocking. Before making them, we made sure to carefully design them, considering the function (material, stitches and size) and the visual appeal (colour and designs).
Spring Term
In Science we have learnt about forces. We explored friction by carrying out a scientific investigation, measuring how far a toy car would roll on various surfaces. The car moved the furthest on a cotton sheet as it was soft and smooth, providing little friction, and moved the least on hessian which was rough so caused lots of friction.
We continued our investigation of forces by exploring how magnets work. We played magnet fishing with a range of objects, observing which objects/materials were magnetic or not. We were surprised to discover that some silver coins are magnetic but some aren't.
In Computing we have been learning about data collection and recording, in particular linking to weather forecasts. We made rain guages using plastic bottles, and left these out to investigate how much rain fall there was over the next week. In typical British fashion, they filled quite quickly!
In PSHE, we learnt about road safety. Our yard has road markings, so we looked at how to cross the road safely - we stopped, looked and listened so we could cross safely,
In History we have been learnig about Ancient Greece. As part of this topic, we have explored their culture, such as art, food, and theatre. We designed and painted plant pots based on their terracotta pots, tasted some Greek food, and made our own Comedy and Tragedy masks.
Summer Term
We have been doing lots of work on Scratch, which is a coding programme, teaching childen basic forms of coding to give instructions to the computer. Our end project was to create an interactive times table quiz, using lots of types of block such as 'ask', 'say' and conditional blocks which would cause something to happen if the correct or wrong answer is given. Variables were used to show the user's name on the screen, as well as their score, which would increase for each correct answer.
SPORTS
Some of our children took part in a Gymnastics event, during which we had chance to practice trampoline, balance and tumbling skills, before carrying out our chosen routines. This was an excellent opportunity for some children to try something new, and showcase how brilliant and brave they are.
The children were great representatives of our school when we visited Corbridge Middle School for the Quad Kids event. They took part in a range of games and activities, including a sprint, middle-distance run, and the howler throw.
TRIPS
In June, Pine class went on a trip to the Sill & Hadrian's Wall, in the heart of the Northumberland National Park. The children took part in an art workshop, creating nature-inspired art, based on the work of Andy Goldsworthy and an art style called Gyotaku, originally a Japanese method of recording fishermen's catches.
The children enjoyed a walk along the wall. We hiked along to the site of Sycamore Gap, with a stop at a Roman Mile Castle en route.
