Handwriting at Slaley First School

Here at Slaley we follow the Letter-join handwriting scheme.

Recent research by the DFE (January 2022) states -

'Learning to form letters and spell words requires considerable effort and attention. Schools, therefore, should consider the advantages to children of delaying the teaching of joined handwriting.'

In line with this recommendation we do not teach the children in Early Years to join up their writing. They are taught only to put a small 'hook' on the end of their letters in preparation for joining in Year One.

In Class One the children are taught to join their letters with the lead outs and in Class Two they are taught to begin with a lead in. This progression works well as  the 'lead out' from a letter becomes a 'lead in' to the next.
